Choosing Your Wedding Cake - Tips

So your date is chosen, the venue is booked and you have poured over hundreds of wedding magazines and websites.  You know your colour scheme and you probably booked your photographer and sent out your save the dates.

Next on the list is your Wedding Cake !!  Choosing your wedding cake is one of the most fun parts of wedding planning.  Mostly because it involves eating lots of cake !!

Here are some of my top tips to consider when choosing your wedding cake and your wedding cake designer.

RESEARCH

Do your research.  I am sure you have either a pinterest wedding board or lots of saved images on your phone.   Look on the internet for wedding cake designers in your area and go through their websites. Ask your venue if they have recommendations of cake designers they have worked with.

Often your friends are getting married / engaged and may have just booked their cake.  Ask them for their recommendations.  One of the best ways to book suppliers is by recommendation.

BUDGET

Wedding cakes vary in price dependent upon many factors.  The size of cake you need (want !), the detail on the cake, the style of cake and even the cake designer who you choose.

Be realistic about your budget.  Decide how much you want to spend on your cake then speak with your cake designer ahead of meeting with them to see if your budget is enough for the style of cake you like.

STYLE

You will decided on a colour scheme, but don't stick to just colours when researching your cakes.  Decide if you are wanting a rustic style cake to fit in with your barn wedding, or an elegant tall cake to match the beautiful tall ceilings in your venue.  Maybe your day is going to be filled with fresh flower arrangements on the tables, do you want these flowers replicating in sugar to go on your cake.

Your cake designer will be able to look at images you have seen and work with you to create a cake which suits you both and is totally unique.

FLAVOUR

Traditionally wedding cakes were fruit, this is much less popular now.  Your cake designer will offer a variety of flavours and it is always a good idea to have a different flavour per tier of cake.  My most popular flavour is my rich chocolate fudge cake, closely followed by my Raspberry & Prosecco cake.

MEET YOUR DESIGNER

Once you have an idea in mind and budget, it is time to arrange to meet with your wedding cake designer.  This gives you the opportunity to look at their display cakes, taste their cake and get to know them.  I think getting to know your suppliers is a huge part of wedding planning.  They are the professionals and their knowledge will help and guide you to what works well for your day.

So thats pretty much it, nothing too complicated but a really lovely part of planning your wedding.  I love nothing more than hearing all about my couples big days whilst we eat cake and draw up a design.

Until next time ...take care xx
